Hunts for Heroes Veterans Day Hunt
The Oconto Sportsmen’s Club proudly hosted Hunts for Heroes on this past Veterans Day. Hunts for Heroes is a program created by veteran Kyle Bushman of Cochrane, WI as a way for disabled veterans and Gold Star family members to get together and share their experiences while enjoying hunting and fishing adventures. A half-dozen disabled veterans from around Wisconsin participated in the day’s pheasant hunt, with some travelling from as far as 4.5 hours away. The day began with an enthusiastic group of sportsmen’s club members greeting our Hunts for Heroes guests with hot coffee, guns, and dogs at the ready. Several hunting teams were formed and included club members to act as guides. Teams went out for a few hours to hunt before returning to the clubhouse for lunch. A hearty lunch was provided by the club for our honored guests, including two varieties of chili, creamed pheasant, and venison stroganoff; with plenty of venison sausage sticks, sliced cheese, assorted other sides, and cookies and cakes for dessert. The hunting teams and their dogs returned to the fields for more outdoor fun in the afternoon sun. Many club members are also veterans, and hunters traded stories with about their service throughout the day. All together, hunters shot about 20 pheasants, which were promptly cleaned and bagged for our Hunts for Heroes guests to take home and savor.
